Prostitution is a theme which we get in novel. Tusiime, Kunihira, Vicky and Edda are prostitute. They are selling their bodies without considering that they can get HIV/AIDS. In our society, prostitution is relevant. Many young girls are selling their body in different places like ‘Uwanja wa Fisi’ and ‘Makoroboi’. This habit is not good as it influence the spread of diseases.
Again, ignorance is a theme which we get in novel. Atwoki is ignorant about HIV. He sleep with a prostitute Edda ad get infected. Many people are ignorant in our society. This is a reason HIV is still a threat in our country.
Another theme is alcoholic behavior. Adyeri is a drunker. This is a reason that, he fail to take care his own family. Exploitation of man power is a theme which we get in novel. Ngotho and other Kenyans are exploited by the colonial government. They are working on settler farms under low wages. To solve this, they join MAUMAU to fight for their liberation. In our society, people are exploited. This is a reason that we have classes, the class of the rich and the class of the poor people. We must change.

Question:
Discuss themes portrayed in two poem of your choice
Themes are the main idea in a literary work. Many themes are portrayed in poems. This can be discussed by using two poems from SUMMONS book: DEVELOPMENT by Kundi Faraja and YOU ARE LOST by Isack Mruma.
Starting with DEVELOPMENT, many themes are portrayed.
Corruption is portrayed in the poem. Leaders are corrupt, that why there is no development in the country. The persona say,
“How is development
To be brought brother
When the people to whom
We have entrusted power
Are corrupt?”
Our society is not developing because we are dealing with corrupt leaders. We need changes.
Exploitation is portrayed in the poem. The majority are exploited by the minorty. Life is difficult because of exploitaion done to people. The persona say,
“The majority plead
Exploited,
Cheated,
Disregarded,
But, brother,
How is development to come?”
Without fighting expoitation and other evils, our society will not develop.
Selfishness is portrayed in the poem. Leaders are selfish as they think about themselves and not the majority. The persona say,
“Their response to egoism,
Is faster than camera film to light
But as slow as tropism
To nation-building.”
Selfishness is a reason of our society remaining underdeveloped because the majority get nothing from their own country.
Bad leadership is portrayed in the poem. The leader is not fit enough to make changes. As a result he failed to bring development. The persona say,
“Do you plead incapable
To bring about development?”
Our society remain poor and underdeveloped due to the leaders who are not competent enough to bring change.
Also by using YOU ARE LOST, themes are portrayed as follows:
Prostitution is portrayed in the poem. Girls are selling their body so as to get money. Also love has changed, now there is no love without money. The poet say,
It is to you dada,
that my pen tears the pad,
For I only see your love
focused on my purse
with your passions
chasing my bank account
In our society, spread of HIV to many youths can be because of prostitution. Education must be provided to help those girl who are prostitute to stop and do other activitied.
Poverty is portrayed in the poem. The persona is a man from low class who is poor and he is trying to show how he can no longer handle a love which involve money. The persona say,
“When I look at you
and see my pay slip
in your eyes
I feel empty
and sapped.”
This poem is relevant with our society. Its true that Without money, its difficult to get loved.
Consciousness is portrayed in the poem. The persona is aware that, Dada is not there for love but for his money. By knowing that situation, he is ready to move on. The persona say,
“It is you I accuse,
because your love is lost,
and you only touch me
with the tenderness that asks
where my wallet is.”
Awareness is highly needed in our society to change money love mentality. In a poor and developing country like Tanzania, many girls think love can be used to get money.
Position of women is portrayed in the poem. Here a woman is portrayed as someone who like money and is immoral because this habit can led her to prostitution and other bad habit. The persona say,
“To you dada.⃰
it’s the days that matter,
For we are unable to chat
in the language we had.”
In our society women are not supposed to follow this pass as it can lead to infection of HIV/AIDS and other diseases.
To sum up, themes portrayed in poetry are relevant with our society. This means as a society we need to find solutions to many of our problems so as to get development.
